ESPN removes Rachel Nichols from NBA coverage and cancels 'The Jump'

David Roberts, ESPN’s senior vice chairman of manufacturing, mentioned in an announcement to CNN Business that the perimeters “mutually agreed that this approach regarding our NBA coverage was best for all concerned.”

“Rachel is an excellent reporter, host and journalist, and we thank her for her many contributions to our NBA content,” he added.

The information concerning Nichols is notable not simply because she is without doubt one of the most well-known NBA hosts on the community, if not the complete sport, but in addition as a result of it comes a month after feedback from Nichols embroiled her, one among her colleagues and ESPN in controversy.

In July, the New York Times printed an eye-popping story that reported feedback that Nichols made about one other NBA analyst, Maria Taylor.
The Times reported a leaked recording of a non-public dialog from 2020 through which Nichols, who’s White, says that Taylor, who’s Black, was chosen to guide final yr’s NBA Finals protection due to the company’s diversity efforts.

Nichols then apologized on air, saying how “deeply, deeply sorry I am for disappointing those I hurt, particularly Maria Taylor.”

Taylor has since parted ways with ESPN after a contract extension between either side couldn’t be reached, in line with the community.

Nichols, who nonetheless has greater than a yr left on her contract, took a second to thank her crew from “The Jump.”

“Got to create a whole show and spend five years hanging out with some of my favorite people, talking about one my favorite things,” Nichols tweeted. “An eternal thank you to our amazing producers & crew — The Jump was never built to last forever but it sure was fun.”

Nichols ended the tweet saying, “More to come…”

The community’s NBA protection seems like it will likely be overhauled — particularly contemplating that ESPN announced two weeks ago that Roberts will lead the community’s NBA manufacturing.
