Govt Formalises Registration Process Of Vintage Motor Vehicles


Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday mentioned his ministry has formalised the registration means of classic motor autos in India, to advertise and protect the heritage of such autos.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had invited public feedback for proposed guidelines on registering classic autos.

‘The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has printed GSR 734 (E) dated November 25, 2020, looking for feedback and options with regard to modification to CMVR, 1989, regarding classic motor autos,’ it had mentioned.

CMVR stands for Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

The draft guidelines outline classic motor autos as all these autos which might be two-wheelers and four-wheelers (non-commercial and private use) and are greater than 50 years outdated from the date of their first registration (together with imported car).

There is a restriction within the definition — no substantial overhaul of the autos that features modification in chassis or physique shell, and/or engine.

A classic motorized vehicle is allowed to run on Indian roads just for show, technical analysis or participating in a classic automobile rally, refuelling and upkeep, exhibitions, classic rallies, and back and forth to such exhibition or automobile rally.
